Athletes foot bath
4 tablespoons vinegar
1 pint water
4 drops peppermint essential oil
Soak your feet in this solution for 20 minutes, three times a day. Vinegar
discourages fungal growth by increasing the surface acidity of the skin.
After soaking feet, apply undiluted tea tree oil, which has powerful
anti-fungal properties. Apply it to the affected area two to three times a
day. The best way to prevent athlete's foot is to keep your feet clean and
dry. Choose cotton socks over synthetic blends.
This blog is filled with lotions, oils, salves, beauty products, personal care products, bath products, cleaning products and just about anything you can make yourself, better and safer for your family. French Provencial Cure all soup
This aigo boulido, or garlic soup, recipe is the Provencal cure for anything that ails you. A traditional recipe that incorporates garlic, herbs, and water, it is known informally as “boiled water.” It helps with colds, flu, stomach ulcers, upset stomach, and sore throats.
4 cups water
10 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced
6 sage leaves
1 small bay leaf
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 egg yolks, beaten
Garlic croutons:
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon butter
3 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced
6 slices baguette
1/2 cup grated Gruyere cheese
In a large saucepan, bring the water, 10 cloves garlic, sage, bay leaf, salt and pepper to a simmer. Continue simmering the broth until the garlic is softened and cooked through, about 10 to 15 minutes. Turn off the burner and strain the garlic and herbs from the water. Return the water to the pan.
Remove the bay leaf and sage leaves from the garlic and discard. Using a fork, smash the garlic into a paste and return it to the pan. Bring the soup to just under a simmer and rapidly stir in the beaten eggs yolks. Continue stirring for 30 seconds, until the eggs are set into thin strands.
In medium saucepan over low heat, sauté garlic in the oil and butter until tender – about 7-10 minutes total. Transfer the garlic to a plate. Place baguette slices into hot oil and sauté both sides until they are golden brown.
Place each finished crouton into an ovenproof bowl, top with the soup, and garnish with a bit of Gruyere cheese. Melt the cheese under a broiler, if desired.

Chicken Pox and Shingles
Chicken pox wash
10 drops Peppermint essential oil
1/2 cup distilled water
Apply solution to spots using cotton wool to provide relief from the itching. Lavender or Rose Geranium Oil may be used in place of Peppermint.
*****
Shingles is the same virus that causes Chicken Pox - Herpes Zoster also known as the Varicella Zoster virus.
Typically shingles are only a problem with adults and most commonly occurs after the age of 40.
Although shingles is very rare in children it can occur. Normally though they have already had Chicken pox. Which by the way, you can get more than once as a child or an adult, depending on the strength of your immune system.
Shingles is a very painful blistering rash, similar to Chicken pox but not with the little 'spots' that form. The breakout will normally follow an area of nerves or nerve bundles as that is where this virus likes to lay dormant. It is very common for these outbreaks to occur along the spinal column or other areas of the back. It is not limited to these areas and can be seen on legs, arms, the main trunk of the body and the face too.
If you have not seen a medical practioner to be diagnosed, please be sure you know what you are dealing with. Do not self treat unless you know that indeed it is shingles. Let your health care provider know you would like to try essential oils as part of your regimen.
In any case, pain and itching are almost unbearable. There are several essential oils that can help relieve the itching and discomfort. Since many of these essential oils are also antiviral it will help to speed your recovery too.
You can take a bath in warm (not hot) water where you have added a few drops of Lavender and / or Tea Tree. Add a cup or two of Baking Soda too. If you can reach the area or have help you can also use cool compresses as needed. Again, using Lavender and Tea Tree or other essential oils from the list below. Use only a drop or two in the basin of water.
In aromatherapy articles written by aromatherapists, many of them suggested using, of course, Lavender but also Ravensara, Niaouli and Bergamot blended in purified water and used as a spritzer, as needed, to help relieve the pain and itching.
Another common suggestion with testimonials by several sufferers reporting it worked well was Ravensara mixed with Tamanu (Foraha) Oil and dabbed on the area. This mixture appears to not only relieve the itching but helps the lesions heal more quickly. If you choose to try this remember, you don't need more than a 5% dilution of essential oils in the Tamanu.
Other essential oils besides those already listed that may be helpful for both itching and pain include German and Roman Chamomile, Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus Citriodora, Lemon, Helichrysum, Spearmint, Peppermint (small amounts), Clove Bud, Oregano, Sage, Rose and Melissa.
For use on children older than 5 remember to use only half the amount in any blend you would use on an adult.
For children under 5 years old, limit the oils to Lavender, Tea Tree, Niaouli, German and Roman Chamomiles and again only in small amounts.
A quick and easy lotion can be made using Calamine Lotion, it is easy to make and use. It helps the itch, pain and dries the lesions quickly.
Anti-itching lotion.
Calamine Lotion - 8 ounces
Lavender -25 drop
German Chamomile - 10 drops
Ravensara - 5 drops
Peppermint - 3 drops
Shake Well and apply to affected areas of skin as needed.
As you know, Calamine Lotion is the recommended lotion by most physicians, along with Baking Soda baths, prior to applying the lotion for Chicken Pox. Adding the essential oils will also help aid in the calming of the child or adult and of course to relieve itching and speed along the healing. When you don't itch or are not in pain, you will sleep better to heal faster.

Foot salve
A great salve for those aching feet after a day shopping or at work.
10 oz. coconut oil (solid, not fractionated)
2 oz. jojoba
3 oz. olive oil
3 Tbs. candelilla wax
1/2 oz. beeswax ( you can replace this with all candelilla wax if you'd
like, I was not happy with the consistency so I added some beeswax)
1 oz. cocoa butter
.5 oz. menthol crystals
10 drops peppermint
10 drops eucalyptus
10 drops naouli
Melt all ingredients together except for the menthol and essential oils.
Remove from heat, stir in menthol crystals, re-heat until crystals are
melted if needed. Remove from heat and let cool before stirring in the
essential oils or they will evaporate, pour into containers.
If you don't have experience in using menthol crystals, they are quite
powerful, so do wear a mask when using them and caution, you don't want
to have your head right over the bowl when mixing this item.

Pine Pitch Salve
This is anti microbial, anti inflamitory nad easily removes splinters
First you need to find your Pine pitch. Here in the Gila, our Piñon Pine trees often have semi-hard globs of pitch on their trunks or at the base of the tree. Summer seems the best time to harvest, since this is when the trees tend to ooze more and it’s easier to pry off the harder chunks. If there’s a major wound that the pitch is coming from, I suggest not pulling the whole chunk off as the tree is trying to heal itself and needs that pitch.
After you’ve collected about half a pint jar’s worth of pitch, you divide it into three different grades. Rock hard chunks, sticky goo and semi-solid bits. Put the goo and semi-solid stuff in a pint jar with the semi-solid stuff on the bottom, and then break up the hard chunks into smaller pieces. I don’t recommend a mortar and pestle for this, it can very messy. The smaller you break up the hard pieces, the quicker they will break down. Sometimes I get lazy and just throw golf ball sized pitch rocks in there, and then it takes damn near forever to properly infuse the oil. Pea sized bits are a lot quicker. If you like, you can wrap the hard bits in some canvas and than hammer the hell out of it, that usually works pretty good.
By this point you likely have very sticky hands and are worried about being permanently glued to whatever you touch next. I’ve seen lots of people try cleaning with rubbing alcohol with less than optimal results. I recommend some nice oil, just rub it into your hands and the stickiness will slide right off. And then your hands smell very nice too!
Next you just fill your pint jar to the top with olive oil (or your salve oil of choice). Now, in order for your infused pine oil to be really effective, you have to get a large percentage of that pitch to dissolve into the oil. Heat is the best way I know to do this. Beware that whatever you heat the Pine pitch in will be pretty hard to clean, so you may not want to use your favorite crockpot. Personally, I just take the whole jar and stick it in my wood stover warmer and leave it there for a couple weeks, shaking occasionally to help break up the chunks. The sun might not be hot enough (depending on where you live), although if you half bury it in some hot sand directly in the sun, it’ll be a lot hotter.
When the chunks are mostly dissolved, strain the oil through a mesh sieve to get out any bark or whatever else was stuck to the pitch. Now you have lovely Pine oil, and can just proceed with your normal salve making process.

Dandelion liver tea
Dandelion tea is excellent for cleansing the liver and kidneys of toxins. It's the best diuretic there is, as it negates the necessity for potassium, it doesn't deplete, it adds potassium. Medicinal diuretics are notorious for depleting potassium and causing other problems.
Cleanses The Liver and Kidney If you live in warm climates and suffer from liver complaints, dandelion is said to give very marked relief. A broth of dandelion roots, sliced and stewed in boiling water with some leaves of sorrel and the yolk of an egg, taken daily for some months, has been known to cure seemingly intractable cases of chronic liver congestion.
Alternatively,
take 2 ounces of freshly-sliced dandelion root, and boil in
2 pints of water until it reduces to 1 pint;
then add 1 ounce of compound tincture of horseradish.
Drink from 2 to 4 ounces.

Liver Tea
Of course, one of the best things you can do for your liver—and your general health—is to go easy on alcohol consumption. If you do overindulge, however, there are herbs that seem to help the liver. For example, ginseng can lower the alcohol level in your blood in 40 minutes, according to research on alcohol-lowering enzymes done by the Korean Ginseng and Tobacco Research Institute. Gamma linoleic acid (GLA) from evening primrose, borage and black currant seeds may prevent hangovers and poisoning and depression from alcohol, and may ease alcohol withdrawal. According to Brian Leonard, Ph.D., a researcher at the University College in Galway, Ireland, GLA also encourages regeneration of alcohol-damaged liver cells. Also, many herbalists have found that fennel seeds help reduce alcohol's effects.
1 teaspoon each dandelion root, milk thistle seeds and roasted chicory root
½ teaspoon each sarsaparilla root, licorice root and ginger rhizome
1 quart water
Combine ingredients in a saucepan and simmer for a couple of minutes. Turn down heat and let steep for about 15 minutes. Strain and drink at least a cup a day.
